What Is llms.txt? How to Create One for Your Website (Free Generator)

llms.txt is a short Markdown file that tells AI assistants what your business does and which pages matter. Here is what it is, what to put in it, and how to add one to your site in minutes.

More people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI for recommendations instead of scrolling through search results. If those assistants misunderstand your business, or cannot find your key pages, you lose customers you never knew you had. An llms.txt file is one simple way to help them.

This guide explains what llms.txt is, what goes in it, whether it is worth your time, and how to create one in a few minutes with our free llms.txt generator.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain-text file written in Markdown that sits at the root of your website, at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It gives large language models (LLMs) a short, clean summary of who you are and links to the pages that matter most.

The idea was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI and is documented at llmstxt.org. Web pages are full of menus, scripts, pop-ups and design code. An AI tool that reads your site has to dig through all of that to find the facts. llms.txt hands it those facts directly.

Think of it as a sitemap for AI assistants: a sitemap tells search engines which pages exist; llms.txt tells AI tools what your business is and which pages explain it best.

What goes in an llms.txt file?

The format is deliberately simple:

  1. A title with your business or site name, as a Markdown H1 (# Name).
  2. A one-paragraph summary as a blockquote (> ...): what you offer, to whom and where.
  3. Optional details: a few short sentences with useful context, such as locations, how to order, or opening hours.
  4. Sections of links under H2 headings (## Services), each link with a one-line description.
  5. An optional “Optional” section for pages an AI can skip when it is short on space.

Here is a small example:

# Example Bakery

> Example Bakery is a family bakery in Austin, Texas, making sourdough bread, pastries and custom cakes.

Orders can be placed online for pickup or local delivery.

## Main pages

- [Menu](https://example.com/menu): Breads, pastries and cakes with prices.
- [Custom cakes](https://example.com/cakes): How to order a custom cake.
- [Contact](https://example.com/contact): Address, opening hours and phone.

## Optional

- [Blog](https://example.com/blog): Recipes and bakery news.

Some sites also publish an llms-full.txt with the full text of their key pages in one file. That is useful for documentation sites; most businesses only need llms.txt.

Does llms.txt actually help?

Honest answer: it is a young convention. No AI company has officially confirmed that it uses llms.txt to rank or recommend businesses. So why bother?

  • It costs almost nothing. A good file takes minutes to create and never slows your site down.
  • It gives AI tools accurate facts. When an assistant or AI agent does read it, it gets your own description instead of a guess.
  • It forces clarity. Writing a one-paragraph summary of your business is a useful exercise for your homepage too.
  • It is part of a bigger picture. Combined with structured data, clear page content and open robots.txt rules for AI crawlers, it makes your site easy for AI to understand.

Treat llms.txt as one item on your AI-search checklist, not a magic switch. Our guide to getting your business cited by ChatGPT and Google’s AI covers the rest.

How to create an llms.txt file in 3 steps

1. Generate a draft

Enter your website in our free llms.txt generator. It reads your homepage and up to six key pages from your menu, such as About, Services, Products and Contact, then writes the summary and link descriptions. Only links that really exist on your site are included. It takes about 20 seconds and needs no sign-up.

2. Review and edit

Read the file once before you publish it:

  • Is the summary accurate and specific? “We sell premium car care” is weaker than “Detailing and ceramic coating studio in Lahore for cars and SUVs.”
  • Remove pages you do not want highlighted, such as old campaigns.
  • Add important pages the generator could not find, like pricing, documentation or a booking page.

3. Upload it to your website root

The file must open at yoursite.com/llms.txt.

  • WordPress: upload llms.txt with your host’s file manager or FTP into the main folder, next to wp-config.php. Some SEO plugins now offer an llms.txt option too, so check yours.
  • Custom sites: put the file in your public or web root folder and deploy.
  • Shopify, Wix and other hosted platforms: you usually cannot upload files to the root directly. Look for an app that adds llms.txt, or ask your developer about a redirect.

Then open the address in your browser to confirm it works.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Marketing language. AI tools need facts, not slogans. Write like a helpful encyclopedia entry.
  • Dead or redirected links. Every URL should open the page directly.
  • Listing every page. Keep it to the pages that explain your business. Use the Optional section for the rest.
  • Forgetting to update it. When you add a service or change prices, update the file.
  • Blocking AI crawlers anyway. If your robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, they may never reach your llms.txt. Our free AI website audit checks this for you.
